A friend my mine brought back a matcha curry retort pouch* from Japan. If you are not familiar with matcha, it is a powdered green tea which is different from a regular green tea that may be most familiar with. It is a lot stronger in flavor. If you are interested in more about matcha, I recommend the Ippodo site. They are one of the biggest green tea dealers, and they explain thoroughly the processes for making matcha..
Matcha is becoming a popular ingredient in a wide range of foods. It has always been used in confectionery, but now the trend seems to be to for it to be used in an even wider range of food products.
This particular matcha curry was a little too bitter for me, probably because I am used to a more traditional Japanese curry, but I though the idea was very creative and interesting enough, and I might try to recreate my own version. I think the idea has a good potential!
* A retort pouch is a type of food packaging made from a laminate of flexible plastic and metal foils. It allows the sterile packaging of a wide variety of food and drink handled by aseptic processing, and is used as an alternative to traditional industrial canning methods..
